Why is the Body Mass Index (BMI) method out of date?

Summary
Body Mass Index (BMI) is now generally considered to be an out-of-date form of measuring a person’s body fat percentage.

Having been devised in 1830, Body Mass Index (BMI) is now generally considered to be an out-of-date form of measuring a person’s body fat percentage by many professionals and organizations in healthcare.

BMI, which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content as it does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, racial and sex differences, according to researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

A number of studies have demonstrated that some individuals with obesity have lower cardiovascular risk and an improved metabolic profile, while a subset of “normal-BMI” people are metabolically unhealthy and have increased mortality risk.
